Deverell Hall Preschool Curriculum

A parents guide to our curriculum

At Deverell Hall Preschool in Purbrook Centre, we implement and follow the The EYFS Curriculum. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), is how the Government and early years professionals (such as teachers at our preschool), may refer to the time in your childs life between their birth and the age of 5. The Early Years Foundation Stage is a very important aspect for your children, as it helps them get ready for school. As well as laying the foundation for their early years, it is preparing them for their future learning and successes. From when your child is born up until the age of 5, their early years experience should be happy, active, exciting, fun and secure. The EYFS Curriculum also supports their development, care and learning needs, in a positive way.

How does Deverell Hall Preschool apply EYFS

There are 7 main areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework that your child will be learning to support their healthy development. Our professional teaching staff will help your child to learn new skills, acquire new knowledge, in turn demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.

Our first 3 areas of development

To begin with, there are 3 prime areas (or skills) that children mostly should develop first. These are:

  • Communication and language (CL)
  • Physical Development (PD)
  • Personal, social and emotional development (PSED)

These "prime areas" are most essential for your childs healthy development, and set them on the way for their future learning and natural growth in understanding the world about us. As the children grow, having these basic skills will in turn help them to develop skills in 4 further specific areas. These remaining areas are:

  • Literacy (L)
  • Mathematics (M)
  • Understanding the world (UW)
  • Expressive arts and design (AD)

These 7 areas of EYFS

These seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage, are used to plan your childs learning and activities at Deverell Hall Preschool. The professionals and keypersons responsible for teaching and supporting your children will make sure that the activities are suited to your childs unique needs. The EYFS Curriculum is a little bit like a primary or secondary school curriculum, but it is designed to be suitable for very young children who are at preschool. Unlike a mainstream curriculum, the Early Years Foundation Stage is designed to be really flexible, so that teaching professionals can follow and support your childs unique needs and interests. During this 7 stage EYFS Curriculum, children learn by playing and exploring. Also by being active, along with creative and critical thinking, this curriculum covers a multitude of fun activities, which take place both indoors and outdoors too.
